How to Code an Off-Canvas Menu - Let's Build: With JavaScript

I'm back with another installment of my Let's Build: With JavaScript series. This tutorial is based around an off-canvas menu experience that was built using a combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

You can accomplish a lot with CSS alone and this tutorial is a great example of that. We'll use a dash of JavaScript to simply toggle classes when click events are listened for. The final result is an app-like UI that uses a hamburger menu to toggle open and close the main navigation. When toggling the navigation I add transition properties with CSS to give an animated look and feel when everything happens.

The Markup

The markup uses three main components, one of which is hidden. The other two will move when classes are added with JavaScript.

CSS/SCSS

Our CSS does a lot of the heavy lifting our experience needs. Multiple transition and transform properties are applied to make the class toggling that transpires with JavaScript more animated.

JavaScript

Our JavaScript is all too simple. I define a function that contains two event listeners. Each listener listens for a click event that toggles a couple of classes required to show and hide the main navigation.

const menuOpen = document.querySelector('.top-nav .menu-open');
const menuClose = document.querySelector('.top-nav .menu-close');
const menuWrapper = document.querySelector('.top-nav .menu-wrapper');
const topBannerOverlay = document.querySelector('.top-banner-overlay');

function toggleMenu() {
  menuOpen.addEventListener('click', () => {
    menuWrapper.classList.add('is-opened');
    topBannerOverlay.classList.add('is-moved');
  });

  menuClose.addEventListener('click', () => {
    menuWrapper.classList.remove('is-opened');
    topBannerOverlay.classList.remove('is-moved');
  });
}

toggleMenu();
